Having heard so much about Real Escape Game, I was dying to trying them out. So when this opportunity came up to bug test one of their games, I jumped at the chance. And unlike their other games which require 8-11 people to play, this game only required 6. What made it even more appealing was that it was a limited-time engagement, meaning you wouldn’t get to play it if you missed the week or so that the game was here.

So what’s interesting about this game is that numerous teams play together, in the same room, at the same time. Each team gets a table, which had some envelopes, pencils and other materials, and there were various puzzles hanging on the surrounding walls. Unlike your typical escape game, you weren’t locked in a room, looking for the “key” to escape. Instead, all teams were trying to get to the final answer, which was related to final “escape”.

Other than walking to the puzzles hanging on the wall, this game was pretty much a sit-down game. I don’t know about you, but for me, part of the fun of playing room escapes is running around trying to figure out which clue to use next. So there was a part of me that felt rather unsatisfied. But hey, if you’re the type who likes to just sit down and solve puzzles, maybe this is for you!

The other aspect that I felt was missing was the story immersion. Since this was a limited-time event, the decorations and equipment was minimal. And with so many other teams around you also playing, it definitely did not give a feeling that you were “escaping from the bank”.

All in all, I’d say it was a good brain exercise, but I’m glad that I only paid a fraction of the regular price (since I was bug testing). I’m not sure that I’d sign up to play any of their future limited-time games, but the geek in me still wants to try their regular games.
